January 7th, 2012 Art Opening: Courtland Blade
7-9 pm FREE

Courtland Blade received his MFA from The School of the museum of Fine Arts Boston in affiliation with Tufts University in 2011. Blade is a painter that works primarily with oil on Canvas. Recently his work has been featured in the 2011 Uindy Biannual Painting Exhibition. Blade’s work has been shown nationally and internationally. His paintings are in various public and private collections. Some of the collections include University of Indianapolis’s permanent art collection and Indiana State University’s permanent art collection.

“From Fall to winter” is a body of work that dwells within benign areas and places of transience around Indianapolis. This series of paintings captures specific moments of isolation within various public spaces around Indianapolis. they exhibit beauty in the seasonal shifts from fall to winter in Indianapolis, as well as the isolation created by a cultural shift in how our spaces are constructed; spaces that are created to order and control large groups of people.

In these paintings, Blade incorporates crisp, high-definition, contrasting color and the strong presence of light. He references these cinematic elements to embody ideas of stark, impersonal space. Films such as Brad Anderson’s The Machinist, Zack Synder’s 300 and Dr. Mark Romanck’s One Hour Photo influence my choices of lighting, volume and perspective.

February 18, 2012 Emily Hurd
Saturday, 8 pm $10

A little over a year in the making, Long Lost Ghosts is the album Emily Hurd’s fans have been waiting for, featuring her signature voice and folk-‐ pop songs that tell stories of old-‐fashioned love and its bittersweet triumph. Highlights include the irresistible blues-‐tinged hit, "Irreparably Yours" and the palpable nostalgia of the cross-‐country driving tune "Long Lost Ghosts." Emily's fervent crooning uplifts in "My Favorite Part," "Silent Conversations," and "I Won't Tell a Soul." For the first time in a long time, she trades in her regular heartbreaker imagery for a welcome dose of contentment in "Brand New," "Skipping Stones," and "Easy Call." The songsmith sings it like she feels it.

Over the course of her eight full-‐length studio albums, Emily's singer-‐ songwriter stylings have effortlessly fused pure vocals and chillingly sparse music with chamber pop, indie soul, and gypsy jazz. On Long Lost Ghosts, she does what she does best: combining acoustic instruments and vivid nature metaphors—singing of winter wheat, crickets, gravel roads, and skylarks—to connect with her audience.

The lilt in her voice is as endearing as ever, and the support of her backing band enhances without distracting from the delicate and hopeful vibe that has come to define Emily Hurd’s music.

Lush vocals, vibrant acoustic production, and tones of defiant optimism run through all the songs on Long Lost Ghosts, echoing the uptempo balladry and intelligent anthems, often linked to kindred troubadours Lyle Lovett and Steve Earle. Emily wrote the songs on her ukulele and recorded them on the vintage grand piano at Chicago’s King Size Sound Labs. The record features an all-‐star line-‐up of Chicago musicians: John Abbey (Robbie Fulks, Amy Speace), Darren Garvey (Cameron McGill and What Army, Miles Nielsen), Sue Demel (Sons of the Never Wrong, Come Sunday), and Maria McCullough (Sleepy Lou, Jonas Friddle).

Emily Hurd is an inspirational national indie act, performing for growing pockets of loyal followers who revel in her ample cache of new and old original songs. She's shared the stage and/or opened for Irma Thomas, Bettye Lavette, Roger McGuinn, and Ozomatli. Her music is featured on the popular CBS crime drama NCIS. She plays live on WGN TV and radio, WXRT radio, amongst other acclaimed Chicago music institutions. She appears on the prestigious Old Town School of Folk Music "Songbook" collection (released by Bloodshot Records). She is a winner/finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, NPR's NewSong

Her supporters in the Southeast run the annual “Emilyfest” in an open barn down in a holler of rural North Carolina. The big skies and high country grass at Emilyfest serve as the perfect backdrop for her fans to listen and lose themselves for a while in her inimitable lyrics. Just listen...

April 27, 2012 Ian McFeron
Friday, 8 pm $10

Ian McFeron, whose lyrical prose has been compared to Bob Dylan, Ryan Adams and David Gray, weaves together a variety of roots-Americana styles to create his own unique blend of roots-oriented American music.

McFeron got his start in the Seattle music scene after his self-produced debut album “Don’t Look Back” (2003) was discovered by “103.7 The Mountain” (AAA-formatted KMTT, Seattle, WA). A recent college graduate and virtually unknown local artist at the time, McFeron’s poetic lyrics and tightly composed songs inspired the media giant to put the album’s lead off single, “Love Me Twice,” into rotation. Listeners responded strongly, and within months, McFeron would share the spotlight with international and national artists such as Patty Griffin, Nanci Griffith, Shawn Mullins, Brandi Carlile, Mike Doughty, Sister Hazel, Amos Lee, Hayes Carll, and Missy Higgins.

His early successes in Seattle launched McFeron headlong into a full-time recording and touring career. Continuing to function as a fully independent artist and self-functioning record label, he would go on to release five more albums in rapid succession, delving into a variety of musical traditions such as blues, folk, pop, gospel, alt-country, and jazz. Currently, McFeron is on tour in support of his sixth album Summer Nights, recorded in Nashville, TN with a cast of musicians drawn from Ryan Adams’ and Patty Griffin’s touring bands, including Doug Lancio, Brad Pemberton, Billy Mercer, Micah Hulscher, and longtime musical partner Alisa Milner.

From the beginning, McFeron dedicated himself to building audiences the old fashioned way: on the road. Traveling from city to city, state to state, nation to nation, McFeron performs an average of 200 shows a year spread throughout the United States and Europe, inspiring listeners with his beautifully crafted songs and honest narratives. On the road, McFeron is joined by long time musical partner Alisa Milner, a Texas-style fiddler, cellist, and harmony vocalist.
