June 11: Hymn for Her (w/ opener Jason Hathaway)

From the moment we heard about this husband and wife duo, we knew we wanted them to park their airstream camper in our parking lot and play a show on our outdoor stage. Nothing says summer like a cigar box guitar and a good dose of riverstomp blues.

We decided this would be a great opportunity for Indy’s own Jason Hathaway to break out his bottleneck guitar and maybe even his guitjo and treat us to a couple of his favorite tunes before the main act takes the stage. This is going to be a hoot!

Lucy Tight and Wayne Waxing inject juiced-up backwoods country blues with a dose of desert rock psychedelia that has been described as “Hell’s Angels-meets-the Amish.”

Over the past few years, Lucy & Wayne have been touring across the country and abroad. They recorded their last album, Hymn For Her Presents . . . Lucy & Wayne and The Amairican Stream, in their vintage 1961 Bambi Airstream trailer at locations stretching from Philadelphia to Malibu on a three month tour.

For their new album Hymn For Her Presents . . . Lucy & Wayne’s Smokin Flames (due out April 23rd) they wanted to kick it into high gear. They traveled to Detroit to work with Jim Diamond, who mixed The Amairican Stream. In his Ghetto Recorders studio, the former White Stripes producer helped the twosome evolve their “stompgrass” sound to something even more heavy and rockin’.

Arriving at Diamond’s studio with road-tested tunes, Hymn For Her recorded live and mixed 12 original songs in just one week. “People wanted what they heard live at shows and we captured that moment and corked it,” explained Lucy.

June 29: Rollover

Prepare yourself for an evening of all-out rock and roll with well-known Chicago band, Rollover. This show has been a long time in the making; we decided there was no time like our tenth summer to pull out all the stops and invite them to play a special show in Indy. You really don’t want to miss this performance.

ROLLOVER was the first band from Chicago ever to be signed by the legendary Bill Graham Managment (Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd The Neville Brothers, Joe Satriani etc..) . They are a band with a classic roots rock sound influenced by late 60's and 70's rock.

After releasing their debut CD, the band scored two singles, "Shipwreck" and "Burning Time," which began getting major airplay on Chicago's WXRT FM Radio. With the help of a radio hit and their strong live shows, they attracted the attention of the ledgendary Bill Graham Managment, who immediatly signed the band. With Graham's help they went on tour to support their CD.

With their popularity secured in Chicago, ROLLOVER hit the road opening for and touring with some of Rock's biggest acts like The Allman Brothers, Sheryl Crow, Blues Traveler, The 1994 H.O.R.D.E. Tour, John Hiatt, Jimmie Vaughan, Hot Tuna, The Neville Brothers, Cheap Trick, Buddy Guy, Eddie Money, Robin Trower, Johnny Winter and many others.

In 1994 ROLLOVER's song "Shipwreck" was featured on A&M Records "H.o.r.d.e CD Sampler". The Band soon became very busy. They were constantly on the road, sometimes spending months on end touring and doing showcases from L.A. to New York and back again.

The band also did several tours between 1994 and 1997 supporting Grammy award winning Guitarist Joe Satriani, including a tour of the U.S. and the U.K. The band played all over the U.K. with Joe and even played at Wembley Arena near London.

ROLLOVER also opened for Joe at the Famous Fillmore in San Francisco for two sold out nights! There is a "official Fillmore poster" pictured on this site from those two great Shows.

Over the years ROLLOVER has released 3 CD's. "ROLLOVER" (1993) "Hold on Til' you Drop" (1997) and "No Place like home" (2003). ROLLOVER's songs have been used for TV shows (The Rachael Ray Show, Nash Bridges, Spelling Productions etc...) and Movies (Lost and Confused).

For the last 18 years Louie Zagoras (ROLLOVER's main singer -songwriter) has been writing songs with Roy Marinell. Roy Co- wrote Werewolves of London, Excitable Boy, and other hits with the late Great Warren Zevon. Roy most recently co-wrote Kid Rock's hit song "All summer long" too. Rollovers second CD "Hold On 'Til You Drop" was released in 1997. The album had two singles that got airplay "Postcard to Myself" and "Kid In a Region" and sold well. The album was co-produced by Jeff Moleski (Smashing Pumpkins, Hole etc...) In 2000 the band was further strengthend by the addition of (Guitarist) Bob Remington, Peter Mahlmeister (Keyboards) and percussionist Dave Plante. Their latest album "No Place like Home", is available through mailorder and at select Record stores as well as online at the ROLLOVER web-site.

July 10: Izzy and the Catastrophics

Discovering a fantastic band for the very first time is a little like being struck by lightning. That’s what happened when Miss Joni first found out about Izzy and the Catastrophics. They pretty much mix up everything she loves—swing, surf, rockabilly, honky tonk and a whole lot of fiendishly energetic male charm. So, we knew we HAD to have them play this summer.

Better bring your dancing shoes, kids. You may never be the same.

Stitching together rock n’ roll, swing, surf, honky-tonk, and bebop, Izzy and the Catastrophics are a profoundly exciting and challenging group. Often compared to rockabilly greats of the past, Izzy and his boys are carrying the tradition into the 21st century with flair and frenzy.

Rooted firmly in traditional American roots music with the chops to nail it and the grit to deliver it, Izzy and his boys are on a lifelong mission to heal the world’s disenfranchised ears by exposing audiences to the glory of their own cultural lineage. Spiritually bound to professional principles yet prone to avant-garde interludes and playfully vulgar stage banter, the band is rapidly building a subculture from every facet of society. Izzy’s shows are as likely to be filled with excitable counter-culture kids as with sentimental old drunks. If there is a common thread connecting everyone who cares for live music, Izzy and the Catastrophics are it.

"If Izzy and the Catastrophics had been the band on the Titanic, they’d have blown that iceberg into cubes for drinks on the ledo deck.” -Brian Baker, Citybeat Cincinnati.

“The best guitarist at this year’s MidPoint might be Izzy Zaidman, leader of the Brooklyn band Izzy and the Catastrophics. Zaidman, a former lead guitarist for Wayne Hancock, did a set at the Blue Wisp of swing, rockabilly and blues, and every song was a showpiece for him or one of his two great horn players” -Chris Varias, www.Cincinatti.com

“Upon arriving and seeing Izzy and the Catastrophics, it became clear that we had been missing out for quite some time. Close your eyes and you would think you had stumbled into a New Orleans jazz club.” -Sonoma, (California) Index Tribune

August 20: Barefoot Movement

It wouldn’t be summer without at least one good show with a fiddle, bass, mandolin and guitar. We’re thrilled to have Barefoot Movement return to the Indy Hostel for another evening of great music. Shoes not required.

The Barefoot Movement is a quartet of immensely talented musicians from North & South Carolina and Tennessee whose music successfully melds Americana influences with the invigoration of acoustic modern rock and jazz. Their sound simultaneously captures the rustic beauty of old Southern front porch Bluegrass improvisation while being immediately accessible to the modern era.

The group was initially formed when Noah Wall, singer and fiddler, and Tommy Norris, mandolin player, attended high school together in their home county of Granville, NC and began setting Noah's lyrics to Tommy's chords. Though the band was threatened when the two members left to attend colleges in different states, it was while Noah was a student of the Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Country Music Program at Eastern Tennessee State University that she met Quentin Acres, when both were chosen to perform for the Old-Time Pride Band. The three soon united to form The Barefoot Movement. The name evolved from Noah's tendency to remove her shoes during shows, a testament to the relaxed atmosphere and down-home stylings of the group. The trio met bassist Hasee Ciaccio at ETSU when she needed a ride home from Merlefest in 2011, and that ride in the Barefoot Van has continued ever since!

Noah Wall's voice is captivatingly honest, marked by a clarity of tone and connection that is rare among modern singers. Mandolin player Tommy Norris and rhythm guitarist Quentin Acres provide an instantly recognizable and intricate backdrop of melody--a symbiosis that allows the group unparalleled fusion and adaptability. Lyrics are written by Noah and are often based on her personal experiences. However, she is also blessed with a profound empathy that enables her to write lyrics based on the narratives of others. Listeners may find themselves engrossed in the travails of heartbreak or experiencing the anguish of war. Whatever the subject, Noah's lyrics are a journey through the human experience. This is made all the more poignant by Quentin's robust voice, which provides a masculine but emotional grounding woven throughout the band's melodies.

This evolution of sound can be heard in their latest record "Footwork," a polished opus showcasing the group's maturation and talent. Noah's voice is subtly piercing while displaying a remarkable range, from the toe-tapping, barn-raising Calico Jack to the melodic, nostalgic Tobacco Road. Barefoot Movement's newest album is nothing short of addictive. Embedded in each track are compelling visual evocations, complex tonal twists, and a downright good time. -Jenn Diffley
